PRACTICAL GUIDE

Preparing for a First Conversation

A short background note, a chronology and a list of questions can make an initial conversation more focused.

Start with one page of context

Describe the people or entities involved, how the matter began, its current position and your main concerns. Separate confirmed facts from assumptions. Specialist terminology is not necessary.

Put the documents in sequence

List key dates and identify the documents that relate to each event. Start with directly relevant agreements, correspondence and notices received, while keeping originals or source files.

Explain your objectives and circumstances

Prepare three to five questions and note any scheduling, communication or budget considerations that matter to you. The scope of service, fees and next steps should be agreed separately before a formal engagement.

This is general guidance on organising information. It is not legal advice on a particular matter and does not replace an assessment by counsel after review of the facts.
